In recent years, this film franchise has had an incredible reboot. Starting in 2005, Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale and directed by Christopher Nolan - together with sequels The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises - became one of very few trilogies to have each part gross over $1 billion.
The character, first published by DC Comics in 1939, has appeared in films since 1940, however earlier films were received poorly by critics. Later additions to Batman canon featured Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney donning the cowl, to varying degrees of success.
